Seamless gutters are essential to protect your home’s siding, foundation, and landscaping by collecting and diverting water away. If you have seamless gutters that were properly installed, they should last 20 years or more. What if you don’t have seamless gutters? How can you tell when your gutters need to be replaced?
There are many signs you can look for to determine if your gutters need to be replaced.
Foundational Damage
If your sectional gutters are leaking, it is time to get them replaced. When gutters leak water towards your home’s foundation, it can result in cracks and damage to your foundation because of the moisture buildup around the foundation.
Foundational damage isn’t always due to leaking gutters. It’s possible your gutters are just clogged with leaves and debris and water is overflowing from your gutters. If that’s the case, then all you need to do is clean your gutters.
You Have Water Leaking in Your Home
Another tell-tale sign that your gutters may need to be replaced is if there is water leaking in your home because of the excess water around your home’s foundation. Again, it could be that your gutters just need to be cleaned. Either way, if you see water leaking into your home be sure to inspect your gutters. They will likely need to be cleaned or replaced.
Your Home’s Exterior is Peeling or Rusting
Noticing rust stains or peeling paint on your home’s exterior? This is another sign that your gutters may need to be replaced if they are leaking. And not to be a broken record, but it could also be that your gutters just need to be cleaned. Keep an eye on your gutters during the next rainfall to see what is going on. Are your gutters leaking (suggesting replacement) or overflowing (suggesting cleaning)?
Your Gutters Are Falling Apart
One of the most obvious signs that your gutters need to be replaced is if they are falling apart. If you’ve found nails and broken fasteners on the ground around your home, it is probably time to get your gutters replaced.
Your Landscaping is Washing Out
When your gutters aren’t working properly, the water that leaks from them will begin to form channels in your landscaping. If left unattended, this can lead to more severe washout or erosion around your home. Your gutters are either leaking and need to be replaced, or they are clogged and need to be cleaned.
Your Gutters are Sagging or Hanging Down
If your gutters are sagging, unlevel, or pulling away from your home, it is time to get them replaced. Sagging gutters will cause water to pool and eventually overflow, leading to damage to your home’s exterior.
Your Gutters are Damaged Beyond Repair
Another sign that your gutters may need to be replaced is if they are dented, bent, or full of cracks and holes. If the damage is beyond repair, you will need to replace your gutters.
Water is Pooling in Your Gutters
If water is pooling in your gutters, you can take it as a sure sign that they are not working properly. Gutters should never have pooling water in them. It might be time to get them replaced, unless there is just a clog in the gutter that needs to be cleaned out.
There are Gaps Between Gutter Connections
If you have regular sectional gutters, you might experience gaps between the gutter connections. Your gutters will leak water if there are gaps between the gutter sections. You may be able to get by with a simple repair by closing those gaps, but it could be that you need to replace the gutters.
